Frances Johnson
My work is a physical response to the connection I feel with the textures, shapes, and movements in nature. I work to translate a response to my surroundings. It is a sensual flow of energy transferred from hand to clay. I feel that my pots are an expression of the life force.
Most of my work is wood fired and each firing has a life of its own. Each firing changes with how and who participates, in the loading of the kiln, the firing process, the weather and the wood. The flame never travels the same path. Each pot carries the memory of the process.
Although I make vessels, function is not what intrigues me. My work reflects the human imprint of a creative idea with its connection to the natural world. Each piece holds a bit of memory, spirit and inspiration of the maker.
