T RM Howard 1908-1976
A doctor, successful entrepreneur, and civil rights activist, Theodore Roosevelt Mason “T. R. M.” Howard was a mentor to activists such as Medgar Evers, Aaron Henry, and Jesse Jackson. As the chief surgeon at the hospital of Knights and Daughters of Tabor in Mound Bayou, Mississippi, and later the president of the National Medical Association, he worked to address social determinants of health that disproportionately impact the black community. In 1972, he founded the largest privately-owned black clinic in America, the Friendship Medical Center on the South Side of Chicago.
Whimbrel populations have declined approximately 4% per year since the mid-1990s. Over a 30-year period Whimbrels have declined by more than 70%.
