John Trudell 1946-2015
A Native American author, poet, musician and political activist, Trudell was the spokesperson for the Indians of All Tribes’ 19-month takeover of Alcatraz Island which began in 1969. Driven by the endemic racial and economic injustice which surrounded him, he joined and chaired the American Indian Movement, which was founded to address systemic issues of poverty, discrimination, and police brutality against American Indians. A 17,000 page FBI file bearing Trudell’s name remains a testament to the years he spent under government scrutiny and pressure for his work as an activist.
Wandering Tattler populations may have declined by 45% over the past three generations according to some studies.
