Paul Ohtaki  1924-2008

A Japanese-American reporter and camp correspondent from Manzanar Internment Camp during WWII.  In high school Paul was hired by newspaper editors, Walt and Milly Woodward, to do clean up work in their print shop on Bainbridge Island, WA where he lived with his parents and siblings. When the WWII internment order came, the Ohtaki’s were forced to Manzanar, California where the Woodward’s convinced Paul to report the news from camp to them. The Woodwards made arrangements for a camp soldier to wire Paul’s reports to them. Their paper was one of only two publications that spoke out against the internment of American citizens.

LeConte’s Thrasher populations have possibly declined 1.99% per year between 1968 and 2015, but there is low statistical confidence in that estimate. If correct, that annual decline would correspond to a cumulative decline of about 62% during that time.
