Jane Addams 1860-1935
An American settlement activist, reformer, social worker, sociologist, public administrator, philosopher, and author, Addams co-founded Hull House, one of America's most famous settlement houses, in Chicago, Illinois, providing extensive social services to poor, largely immigrant families. Addams became the first American woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, and in 1920, she co-founded the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). Addams helped America address and focus on issues that were of concern to mothers or extensions of the domestic-work assigned to women, such as the needs of children and local public health.
American Golden Plover populations have declined 70% over the past 40 years.
