Making ceramic work has always been a ritual process for me, an opportunity to be present and pay attention. Ritual is about repetition, and my current ritual involves making multiples, moving from one object to the next, exploring variations of form and surface. This repetition and focus can materialize as prayer beads, vases, or sculpture. I especially enjoy creating objects that invite intimacy through visual and tactile richness.
My series of hearts are inspired by the tradition of using milagros, the symbolic charms that people offer to seek spiritual assistance, focus attention on a problem, or express gratitude for the resolution of a problem. The ritual of making and using milagros, prayer beads, and other multiples is a way to address uncertainties and pay attention to a compelling memory, question, concern, or hope.
